About My Research

Community Ecology, Theoretical Ecology, Conservation Biology, Evolutionary Biology

My research uses a variety of scientific approaches to integrate applied, theoretical, and basic research. I use field experiments, long-term demographic studies, and mathematical models to study how species interact with each other and their environment, all with a conservation underpinning. My current research focuses on five major areas:

Assessing the effect of competition on the stability of species assemblages

Using matrix succession models to project population dynamics among species

Studying the effect of management practices on the recovery of endangered species

Examining trophic cascades in fragmented coastal sage scrub habitat

Testing the role of ecological constraints in the evolution of cooperative breeding

My research is conducted in Tallahassee (Florida), San Diego (California), and Carmel Valley (California).
